Career Guidance

CAREERS AND CURRICULUM SUPPORT CO-ORDINATOR

As a secondary student you are asked to make important decisions about your future.  You may already have strong views on what you are best suited to, or, you may be seeking advice from a range of people: teachers, your family and friends.

You may know that you want to go on to university, TAFE, a private training organisation or an apprenticeship after you finish school.  Alternatively you may wish to travel, study overseas, or get a job.   Whatever course you take, it is inevitable that you will enjoy a variety of occupations in your working life.

You will need skills not only to build the career you want, but to plan and manage your career as it evolves.  You will need to know how to identify your strengths and weaknesses, and how to work with others in a team or business environment.

There will be many sources of information and help for you in managing your career.

It is important for you to talk with people who are available to help you reach decisions about your future.  Your parents have the real-life experiences to help you.  Use them as sounding boards for your ideas.

Also, you can seek out the expertise of the career adviser, Mr Phil Coverdale at St Mary’s College.  He can help you:

  • to choose the subjects you undertake in Years 11 & 12 in order to seek entry into TAFE or University;
  • to gain qualifications even while you are at school, through a school based Apprenticeship or Traineeship;
  • with general careers advice;
  • liaise with the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) and individual Universities and TAFE regarding suitable tertiary courses;
  • Queensland Core Skills preparation and organisation;
  • QTAC online registration advice.

Mr Coverdale is available to both students and parents during school time and after school.  He also organises and is available at a number of information evenings throughout the year to which students and parents are welcome to hear and discuss concerns they may have regarding careers and tertiary study.
