Old Boys' Association

 

The St Mary's Old Boys' Association is a seperate incorporated body which has a long history of providing sporting facilities for the students of the College and the wider community.

The Association exists to support the provision of educational services to the St. Mary’s College.  There is a strong link between the Association and the St Mary’s College.  Paragraph 2 of the objects of the constitution of the St Mary’s Old Boys’ Association Inc. states,

 

The primary objectives of this Association is to

 

(a)    provide new and improve existing facilities for St Mary’s College in Toowoomba.

(b)    provide sport and recreational facilities for the use of St Mary’s College students and the wider community.”

The Association has spent considerable resources in constructing the magnificient  Two Court National Standard Indoor Sports Complex, The Clive Berghofer Arena.  This Complex was jointly funded by the State Government and Toowoomba City Council. The Association also received generous donations from the community.  The Association borrowed the remaining funds from Mr Clive Berghofer.  

The Clive Berghofer Arena is used by the students of the College on a daily basis for a wide variety of sporting activities.  The Arena is also used by the wider community on a commerical basis providing much needed sporting and recreational facilities to the local area.

The Association has been in the business of acquiring property for the benefit of St Mary’s College and the wider community.  The Association has been in this business since 1948.  Since 1948 the Association has acquired the equivalent of 34 residential blocks.  The Association currently owns 1 residential blocks all providing rental incomes.

The acquistion of these properties over the years has eventually resulted in the playing fields used by the students located between Herries Street and Hill Street which is the equivalent of a football field, soccer field and cricket nets.

The Association has provided St. Mary’s College and the community with a Multi Purpose Centre.  The T.P O’Brien Centre is used by the College as a Hall and the community for a wide variety of activities.  The T.P O’Brien Centre was constructed in 1983 for $200,000.
