SPORT
At St Mary’s College we value the benefits of being involved in sport. Lifelong friendships, team work and being active all play a part of the everyday life of our boys. We offer opportunities for the boys to participate and excel in a variety of sports.
The Primary works with the different sporting clubs but at times we require the boys to also make a commitment to School Sport. Students are expected to uphold the strong values of sportsmanship when representing the College at all levels of competition.
St Mary’s Primary has a proud tradition in the Friday afternoon primary school competition. Every student in the school will have an opportunity to play in a team sport at least three terms a year. They will have coaching from staff and secondary students throughout these sporting commitments and will develop a number of different skills that can be used in various settings. This team environment helps the boys to foster a sense of belonging to the school community. Training for the sports is compulsory and will vary depending on the different sport. Some sports will train during school times while others will be out of school hours.
The following sports are offered over the year. Each sporting term lasts about 8 weeks and is played around various venues in Toowoomba.
Term 1
- Softball
- Tennis
- Volleyball
- AFL
Term 3
- Rugby League
- Soccer
- Hockey
Term 4
- Touch Football
- Cricket
- Futsal
Opportunities also exist for boys to represent the college in swimming (Term 1), athletics (Term 2) and cross country (Term 3). Teams are selected from our College carnivals and training is expected in preparation for the zone trials that follow. Our Old Boys run Basketball and Futsal competitions in the stadium outside of school hours. A number of junior boys participate in these competitions each year.
