Career Guidance

As a secondary student, you will be asked to make important decisions about your future and to investigate various pathways that lead to different careers. You may already have strong feelings on what you are best suited to, or, you may be completely unsure of what the future holds for you. Without exception you will need to seek advice from a range of people: teachers, careers advisors, your family and friends. You will need to develop a skill set required for career searching and application.
You may know that you want to go on to university, TAFE, a private training organisation or an apprenticeship after you finish school. Alternatively you may wish to travel, study overseas or get a job. Whatever course you take, it is inevitable that you will enjoy a variety of occupations in your working life.
You will need skills not only to build the career you want, but to plan and manage your career as it evolves. You will need to know how to identify your strengths and weaknesses and how to work with others in a team or business environment. In addition, you may be looking for a casual job while you are a student and need to develop a resume and techniques to use in job applications and interviews.
There will be many sources of information and help for you in managing your career and with job applications. It is important for you to talk with people who are available to help you reach decisions about your future. Your parents have the real-life experiences to help you. Use them as sounding boards for your ideas.
Also, you can seek out the expertise of the Careers Co-ordinator, Mr Andrew Street, at St Mary’s College. He can help you:
