This Friday, 23rd February, a group of St Mary’s College Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander boys will venture to Brisbane for the launch of the JT Academy. This academy, formed by proud old boy of St Mary’s College, Johnathon Thurston, has been formed to support and enable the best possible education outcomes for Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander students. A quote from Marcus Garvey is the motto behind this academy - Intelligence rules the world, ignorance carries the burden….

Recently, Johnathon Thurston received two accolades, Queenslander of the Year 2017 and the Human Rights Medal in honour of his ongoing commitment to improving the life outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. In his Queenslander of the Year award speech, Johnathon said, “I’m very passionate about my culture and trying to inspire the next generation of my culture and young Australians.” The JT Academy, is definitely doing this as it aims to offer all Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander students the best possible and most valuable lifelong gift of education.  The boys will be ambassador students at the launch of this academy and we look forward to positive involvement with this academy into the future. We sincerely thank Johnathon Thurston for his invitation to our boys and to Mrs Sonya Lynch and Miss Kirsty Elliott who have communicated with the JT Academy to make our boys’ attendance at the launch possible.
